Bexley Village is at the heart of the London Borough of Bexley and bears the DA5 postcode. Bexley, Bexley Village and Joyden's Wood border Blackfen, Sidcup and Crayford. Bexley Village is sometimes referred to as Old Bexley, which adds to its appeal, and its friendly, close-knit community has always appealed to families and young professionals. The village feel has been maintained thanks to a strong network of local, independent retailers and voracious support from the local community.
Bexley Village has resisted the urge to transform into a faceless retail destination - there's no Tesco or Starbucks. Instead there is string of unique shops along a pretty High Street, with a big emphasis on independent trading. The village is still the first place local residents head for retail therapy. There's a mix of home and interior stores, clothes shops, restaurants, bars and pubs, cafés, two bakeries, two delis and a library. Hamers deli, Village Kids designer clothing and Chex Boutique are just three shops that people travel from far and wide to visit. Elsewhere are other local parades of shops as well as The Broadway shopping centre in nearby Bexleyheath.
Hall Place is Bexley's most notable attraction. This Grade 1 Tudor listed country house, built in 1537 for a former Lord Mayor of London, features 65 acres of award-winning gardens; the Bexley Museum Collection and the riverside café. Freemantle Hall in Bexley Village itself is the venue for craft fairs, children's parties and community functions. There are several churches in and around Bexley, with two of the most attractive - St Mary's and St John's - sitting proudly at opposite ends of Bexley Village. A walk on foot around the village also reveals the ancient manor house, High Street House and the Styleman's Almshouses - all which have architectural importance. Children have been playing for years in the park on the 'Golden Acre' green space in the village, and nearby Bexley Woods and River Shuttle give plenty of opportunities to explore and interact with nature. For those who like to relax, head to the spa at Reynolds gym - set in a converted chapel with glorious Georgian architecture. Sample the monsoon showers, an ice fountain and the wet salt steam baths.
Food and Drink
Bexley Village is a veritable melting pot of styles and venues when it comes to food and drink. It is arguably Bexley's premier place to head for fine dining. Ferraris Italian is one of the borough's best places to eat and booking is always advised. There's also Flavours of Morocco, Bamboo (Chinese), The Greek Taverna and a couple of good Indian restaurants. Bar Lorca is a lively cocktail bar, while The Millers Arms, The Kings Head, The George and The Railway Tavern provide a refreshing tipple and some good pub grub without having to leave the High Street.
Although classed as a Greater London Borough, Bexley stands on the very outskirts of Kent on the River Cray, and was in the Diocese of Rochester. It is this 'betwix' nature that appeals for those looking for one foot in the city and another in the country. The Shaw family - one of London's most famous architectural clans - came from Bexley and it was John Shaw who was a pioneer of the semi-detached housing type.
With its historic roots it's no surprise that there are some fantastic period properties in Bexley, from cosy cottages through to large Arts & Craft-style houses.
