The area of Walderslade encompasses mainly the ME5 postcode. It is made up of various smaller residential areas including Wayfield near Chatham to the North, Bluebell Hill and some of the villages north of Maidstone to the South, the Davis Estate towards Rochester to the West and Lords Wood bordered by Capstone Country Park to the East. The population is approximately 30,000 and is served by a range of local shops, schools, commuter links and various public services.
Walderslade is served by a central village square where you will find a Co-op supermarket as well as small local shops including florists and newsagents, a chemist, a dry cleaner and a hairdresser. Other residential areas have their own local stores, pubs and facilities, while there is a Morrisons supermarket situated on Princes Avenue. The Horsted Retail Park and a large Asda are close by in Rochester.
The Wayfield Estate is home to a golf driving range with a pitch and putt golf course a and a playing field, while the estate also borders two areas of woodland; the Snodhurst Wood and the Collibank Woods. There are also playing fields opposite The Poacher’s Pocket pub close to Walderslade’s village centre, and at Hook Meadow in the Weeds Wood neighbourhood.Those that like an active life will enjoy Lordswood Leisure Centre and the Fitness First, both in neighbouring Chatham.
Food and drink
Most Walderslade neighbourhoods have a good selection of cafes, pubs, restaurants and take-aways, including Indian, Chinese and English cuisine. Pubs to try include The Sherwood Oak, The Tiger Moth, The Poacher's Pocket and The Kestrel. The Bridgewood Manor Hotel is home to the popular Squires Restaurant for more formal dining.
The name Walderslade means ‘wood in a valley’ in Saxon. Although some areas of woodland still remain, clearance for farming was recorded as early as the 1700s when some of the valuable wood was supplied to nearby Chatham Dockyard for the building of wooden sailing ships. Archeological finds and other evidence in the area suggest that Lords Wood Lane may originate from at least the Bronze Age period and is probably the oldest lane in Walderslade. Lordswood still retains a small number of large mature trees saved from the clearance of woodland for housing and other purposes.This former small rural village totally transformed after World War I and many of the residential estates were built during further expansion after World War II, with Walderslade Woods being one of the most recent developments.
Most of the properties in Walderslade are post WWII, although some properties are early twentieth century. There is a well proportioned mix of flats, maisonettes and starter homes through to the traditional three-bedroom semi-detached and family properties, as well as larger four-bedroom detached and executive individual homes. Many people are able to stay in the area to upsize or downsize; there are a few semi-detached and detached bungalows as well as two retirement complexes.
This area is served mainly by Medway Council but some areas also fall within the Boxley Parish of Maidstone Council and others are covered by Tonbridge and Malling Council.

Walderslade is situated just off junction three of the M2, which leads to the coast eastbound or the A2 London bound. From junction three, the A229 leads to the M20/A20 roads to the coast/ London. Mainline stations can be found in the nearby towns of Chatham, Rochester, Gillingham and Rainham, with frequent services into central London. Coaches are popular mode of commuter transport and Kings Ferry is one of the companies that run commuter coaches from this area to London. Walderslade is well served by bus routes, making access to the other Medway towns exceptionally easy.
