Overview
Gravesend is situated on the borders of the Medway Towns and is approximately six miles from the M25. It is conveniently located for easy access to London and offers the benefits of both a busy shopping town and a tranquil semi-rural village. Landmarks include the Pocahontas statue, the pier and the clock tower. Gravesend is very multi-cultural and boasts the biggest Sikh temple in Europe. Nearby Gravesham is a very historical area that has very strong links with Charles Dickens.
Shopping
Gravesend offers a wide selection of shops and supermarkets from Asda and Morrisons to department stores like Debenhams and Marks & Spencer. There is a High Street situated in the town centre, which includes independent fashion shops, collectables stores, a variety of coffee houses and antique shops. This High Street is also known as The Heritage Quarter, which leads down towards the River Medway. Gravesend town centre also features banks, beauty salons, bakers, butchers, newsagents and a Post Office. The market hall is also open six days a week.
Attractions
Gravesend and the surrounding areas have something for all ages and cultures. If it’s the outdoors you enjoy then you can visit one of several country parks, including Shorne Country Park – a large ancient woodland site where you can enjoy nature trails, adventure play areas, educational programmes about nature and wildlife, fishing and an eco-friendly coffee shop. One of the more famous attractions in Gravesend is the burial site of Princess Pocahontas in St. Georges Church. In 1958 a bronze statue of Pocahontas was unveiled in the St. George’s Church gardens, which has attracted many visitors over the years. Gravesend also has its own Blue Square Premier Football Team – Ebbsfleet United.
Food and Drink
There are many restaurants and pubs in the area, most of which offer a whole range of foods, from carvery and fast food outlets to Italian, Chinese, Indian and Thai eat-in restaurants. History
Gravesham was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 as belonging to Odo, The Bishop of Bayeux. Many locals believe that the name of the town is linked to the plague when bodies were brought down from London for burial – resulting in Graves-End. However, the name Gravesend was recorded 500 years before the plague. One of the area’s most notable figures is Charles Dickens, who is associated with Gravesend and the surrounding villages. He honeymooned in Chalk, found inspiration for his novel The Pickwick Papers at Cobham, and he lived and died in the nearby village of Higham.

Transport Links
Over the last few years a vast amount of money has been spent on developing and improving roads and transport links in and around the area. Gravesend is the stop before Ebbsfleet International Station so the town benefits from this new high speed rail connection. It is now possible to travel into St. Pancras International from Gravesend in just 17 minutes. Going in the opposite direction you can be in Paris in a little as two hours. Trains from Gravesend also run into London Bridge, Waterloo East and Charing Cross. There are direct bus routes to Bluewater and major towns in Kent like Dartford and Rochester. The A2 passes through Gravesend and offers a direct road route into Central London or out Canterbury and the M25.
