Blackheath Area Guide

Blackheath snapshot

A beautiful village centre peppered with boutiques and stunning views over London’s skyline characterise Blackheath but it’s the 55 hectares of sprawling common that are the jewel in the crown. The grassland is home to one of London’s most jaw-dropping firework displays, as well as the OnBlackheath music festival, major kite flying events and the start of the London Marathon.

Blackheath: where?

Covering the SE3 postcode, Blackheath is located jointly in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough if Lewisham. Greenwich is Blackheath’s immediate neighbour, with Shooters Hill, Charlton, Lewisham and Deptford close by. Canary Wharf and the capital’s most prominent landmarks are clearly visible from the Common, illustrating just how close Central London is.

The BIG 3:

1. Transport:

  • Own train station in the centre of the village
  • Direct connections to London Bridge, Charring Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria and Woolwich Arsenal (for the DLR and Crossrail)
  • Immediate access to the A2, which runs right through Blackheath Common

2. Schools:

The mix of private and state education in Blackheath has always attracted families, with faith, preparatory and academy schools throughout the town. There’s a ‘find-a-school’ facility on every one of our online property listings, where you can filter schools by age, type and Ofsted rating.

3. Attractions:

Nothing beats mooching around Montpelier Row, Old Dover Road and Tranquil Vale, dipping in and out of the shops, while Blackheath Farmers’ Market continues to draw the crowds. In the summer, people spill out of pubs onto the common itself, while winter brings the famous bonfire event and twinkly Christmas lights. Blackheath Conservatoire of Music & the Arts, Blackheath Halls and the Ranger's House - housing the Wernher Collection of art – lend a healthy dash of culture.

Blackheath property

There’s no shortage of grand character properties, including fine Victorian and Georgian houses in The Paragon - a Grade I listed crescent overlooking the common. The Cator Estate Conservation Area and the Grade II listed Royal Herbert Pavillions are two other property hotspots. Those looking for entry level homes should look towards the Lewisham borders and Kidbrooke, where a vast Berkeley Homes development has transformed the area. Blackheath is covered by two different local council's, as below:
