Gravesend Area Guide

Gravesend snapshot

A £15 million regeneration of Gravesend’s retail and leisure quarter is hotly anticipated, with new bars, restaurants and a cinema raising this maritime town’s reputation. Residents already love the sensible house prices, grammar schools and speedy rail line in to London. Add in a semi-rural setting, river views and historic links to Charles Dickens and Pocahontas, and you have a great place to put down roots.

Gravesend: where?

Perched on the banks of the River Thames in Gravesham Borough – looking across the waters to Tilbury - Gravesend is one of Kent’s busiest towns. To the west lies Northfleet and Dartford, and the Medway towns are a short drive in a south easterly direction. Outlying villages include Chalk, Higham, Shorne, Cobham, Luddesdown, Meopham, Istead Rise and Vigo.

The BIG 3:

1. Transport:

  • Own train station with direct routes to London
  • Gravesend to St. Pancras Int. in 17 minutes
  • Gravesend to Paris, via Ebbsfleet, in as little as 2 hours
  • Additional services to London Bridge, Waterloo East & Charing Cross
  • Quick access to the A2 & M25

2. Schools:

Gravesend has two grammar schools – one each for boys and girls – complemented by a choice of respected state and private schools too. There’s a ‘find-a-school’ facility on every one of our online property listings, where you can filter schools by age, type and Ofsted rating.

3. Attractions:

Shop ‘til you drop one day and enjoy waterside dining on the world’s oldest cast iron pier the next. Gravesend has a bustling town centre encircled by a number of cute villages for unbeatable variety. Don’t miss the cyclopark, the ornate Sri Guru Nanak Darbar Sikh temple, Meopham’s windmill, Shorne Country Park and the regular farmers’ markets that take place across the borough. Event highlights include the summer Riverside Festival and the Christmas Frost Fairs.
