Rainham & Gillingham Area Guide

Rainham & Gillingham snapshot

It’s easy to see why families and commuters flock to these Medway towns. Several sprawling country parks, riverside views and a super-fast train service to St Pancras in one direction and to the Kent coast in the other are joined by grammar schools and extensive shopping facilities.

Rainham & Gillingham: where?

Rainham and Gillingham form part of the Medway Towns. The north of Rainham borders the Medway estuary, while the east has a more semi-rural feel. Rainham has its own neighbourhoods, including Rainham Mark, Parkwood, Wigmore, Twydall, Meresborough and Lower Rainham, all falling in the ME8 postcode. Hempstead, Bredhurst and Gillingham - ME7 - sits to the north west of Rainham and also enjoys a border with the Medway estuary.

The BIG 3:

1. Transport:

  • Mainline stations at Rainham and Gillingham
  • Services running to St Pancras, Victoria, Ebbsfleet International, Canterbury East, Ramsgate and Margate
  • Popular National Express coach service departing from Hempstead Valley
  • Well connected to the A2 and M2 junction 4

2. Schools:

The choice of primary and secondary schools is extensive, and includes some of Kent’s best grammars. There’s a ‘find-a-school’ facility on every one of our online property listings, where you can filter schools by age, type and Ofsted rating.

3. Attractions:

Retail, recreation and rural is the order of the day. Parkwood Shopping Centre, the Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre, Gillingham High Street and Gillingham Business Retail Park make for very happy shoppers but you’ll find open-air antidotes on the doorstep. Capstone Country Park, Berengrave Nature Reserve and Riverside Country Park are ready to explore. And why not tee off at Upchurch Golf Club, cheer on The Gills at Gillingham Football Club, glide across the ice at the Silver Blades Ice Rink or watch the Rainham Theatrical Society at The Oasthouse Theatre?
